Impeach Bush

UPDATE: April 15, 2008 Well, it’ll never happen now. When I wrote this (January 2006) I actually had my hopes up that it would happen, due to the rising influence of the Democratic Party in Congress. Betrayal is all I feel now; the elected and re-elected Congress people went in with two clear mandates from the consenting governed: Impeach Bush and End the War. So far, they are 0 for 2.
At least one of the Dem candidates (Obama) is promising now that, if elected, Bush’s crimes will be prosecuted. The first one they should pursue conviction for is the one he recently confessed to, namely the use of torture as an interrogation method. The Geneva Conventions are constitutionally as binding on US Presidents as is the Constitution itself; Bush & Co broke the law, and are leading the country further away from the Rule of Law. They must be made an example of how America deals with lawlessness, or we must all expect more of the same.

Elizabeth Holtzman, former member of Congress who sat on the House Judiciary Committee during the impeachment proceedings against President Richard Nixon, in the current issue of The Nation:

As awful as Watergate was, after the vote on impeachment and the resignation of President Nixon, the nation felt a huge sense of relief. Impeachment is a tortuous process, but now that President Bush has thrown down the gauntlet and virtually dared Congress to stop him from violating the law, nothing less is necessary to protect our constitutional system and preserve our democracy.

Jim, you correctly protested (and I joined you) in Bob Sand’s attempts to “impeach” you to your employer, over what he perceived and didn’t like in your politics.

The only question I have, is how is your attitude toward President George W. Bush, any different then Bobs? You don’t like President Bush’s politics…so you wish for him to be impeached by his employers. IMO, your demonstrating exactly the same attitude which Bob demonstrated to you!

J.R the un-repentant conservative!

High crimes and misdemeanors is the difference, J.R. The whole article, should you choose to read it, brings together the evidence. Whereas Bob’s complaints against me could never be characterized as crimes, the behavior of our president has been characterized by better legal minds than ours as deserving of a criminal investigation. I guess where Bob and I agree is that criminal behavior must be brought to justice. When committed by a leader, the crime is more serious. The more visible and influential the leader, the more urgent the need to stop the behavior. Of course, I wouldn’t expect either you or Bob to see President Bush’s behavior as criminal, any more than he sees it himself.

If Bob’s impeachment of me had ever gone any further, I’m convinced now that it would have been laughed out of “court,” (meaning whichever authoritative body would have been last to hear it and shut it down) and he could easily have been shown to be grinding an axe, out of his jurisdiction, and possibly nursing a vendetta. I’m glad that you didn’t join him in that.
