Buffy Sainte-Marie – Universal Soldier
Posted on July 12th, 2007 No commentsUNIVERSAL SOLDIER
Buffy Sainte-Marie
Caleb Music-ASCAPI wrote “Universal Soldier” in the basement of The Purple Onion coffee house in Toronto in the early sixties. It’s about individual responsibility for war and how the old feudal thinking kills us all. Donovan had a hit with it in 1965.
He’s five feet two and he’s six feet four
He fights with missiles and with spears
He’s all of 31 and he’s only 17
He’s been a soldier for a thousand yearsHe’s a Catholic, a Hindu, an atheist, a Jain,
a Buddhist and a Baptist and a Jew
and he knows he shouldn’t kill
and he knows he always will
kill you for me my friend and me for youAnd he’s fighting for Canada,
he’s fighting for France,
he’s fighting for the USA,
and he’s fighting for the Russians
and he’s fighting for Japan,
and he thinks we’ll put an end to war this wayAnd he’s fighting for Democracy
and fighting for the Reds
He says it’s for the peace of all
He’s the one who must decide
who’s to live and who’s to die
and he never sees the writing on the wallsBut without him how would Hitler have
condemned him at Dachau
Without him Caesar would have stood alone
He’s the one who gives his body
as a weapon to a war
and without him all this killing can’t go onHe’s the universal soldier and he
really is to blame
His orders come from far away no more
They come from him, and you, and me
and brothers can’t you see
this is not the way we put an end to war.

Jim Miles – TaurenDreams
Posted on December 31st, 2005 No commentsHere’s a song I slapped together in AcidPro, I think. It turned out okay, I guess. No instruments were played by me, sampled by me, or recorded by me. All sounds you hear were supplied with the software, I only supplied the sequencing of them. Shows you how easy it is these days to create music. Makes me respect even more those who can do it well without the aid of any computers!
Several versions for you:

Jim Miles – Toolz
Posted on December 31st, 2005 No commentsI made this a couple years ago with the Fruity Loops audio sequencer, now known as Fruity Studio. Check the My Gear page for more info on the software.
I didn’t sample or record any of the sounds, myself; they all came in a package with the software. all I did was make several tracks out of the different industrial sound effects, and sequence them into a rhythm, and add a simple bass track.

One World Is Enough
Posted on August 16th, 2005 2 commentsIn 1981, The Police’s most socially conscious album was released, titled Ghost In The Machine. I was in 10th grade. I was very much into this band already by then, and they were popular on the radio. I purchased the vinyl LP and began listening to it religiously.
I still listen to the songs, and I still am taught by them, and influenced in my political views by them.
Sting represents what to me is the highest purpose of music, whether it is religious or secular in nature: impacting the world for the better. Rock is generally not known as a style of music that is capable of influencing people positively and morally. But when musicians manage to do it, as I believe U2 has been doing for some time now, I stand up and applaud.
Rock is a genre that strongly resonates with me, and I would describe The Police as such for the sake of categorizing. But they don’t sound to me very much like any rock band that preceded them or followed them (so far). Other genres I’ve heard attached to Police include world music and new wave. Jazz and reggae are obvious influences of theirs. Whatever.
The five studio albums of the Police are high on my list of “most important” listening. Having played in two local-only bands, I’m asked what my influences are. The Police are in my top three of deepest influence. If I was to try to make music seriously myself, I would follow most closely in the footsteps of Sting and The Police.
Why? They accomplished the very difficult task of encapsulating very important themes and messages in music that was both chart-topping for their moment of glory, and yet sophisticated enough to be long-lasting in the “years-later” listening experience. This music is still very cool! And still so relevant.
Here’s the first of several entries I’ll make in the category of quotes using lyrics from works by Sting and the Police.
Enjoy, and think about these words. If you can, hear them performed by The Police.
One World (Not Three) Lyrics
I edited out the repeats which mean more when listening to it than reading the wordsOne world is enough, for all of us
It’s a subject we rarely mention
But when we do we have this little invention
By pretending they’re a different world from me
I shelve my responsibility
One world is enough, for all of usThe third world breathes our air tomorrow
We live on the time we borrow
In our world there’s no time for sorrow
In their world there is no tomorrow
One world is enough, for all of usLines are drawn upon the world
Before we get our flags unfurled
Whichever one we pick
It’s just a self deluding trick
One world is enough, for all of usI don’t want to bring a sour note
Remember this before you vote
We can all sink or we all float
‘Cause we’re all in the same big boat
One world is enough for all of usIt may seem a million miles away
But it gets a little closer everyday
