Fundamental Doctrines

// January 21st, 2006 // 3 Comments » // General

These probably aren’t doctrines, but they are fairly fundamental for me:

1 John 4:8 “GOD IS LOVE.”

1 John 4:18 “THERE IS NO FEAR IN LOVE.”
Love does not use fear to promote itself. It is not loving to scare souls toward a God of love.

John 15:15 “I no longer call you servants… I call you friends.”
I did once call you servants. That was when you did not yet grasp fully the plans I have and my way of carrying them out. I now have come and lived out a life here to show as clearly as possible my way, my plans, my love. Now you are starting to see the deeper dimensions of my love. Hopefully you’ll now see that my reason for creating you was for friendship with me, not because I needed servants (why would I, GOD, actually need servants?!).

I’ve shaped my relationship with my people carefully through the years, from slaves in Egypt, to a free nation, to exiles in Babylon, to you, occupied by Caesar’s legions but eagerly waiting for your Messiah. Many who have counted themselves among my people have refused my invitations to grow closer to me. Many refuse to see Me for who I AM. You, my friends, are more open to my requests than anyone before you; you know well the history of my people and you have found the Messiah.

What is Prayer?

// January 21st, 2006 // Comments Off // General

Turning toward Him is the most common phrase I find myself going back to. Talking to God, certainly. Unburdening on Him. But increasingly I question the things that I’m asking God to “do for me” or “give to me.” And telling Him about things that, in my perception, He and I just watched happen, seems a little weird because, He could say “Hey, I know! I was right there next to you, remember?!” So if I do that, it’s more on the nature of “what was that all about?”

GO!

// December 13th, 2005 // Comments Off // General

A recent post I made on heavenlysanctuary.com:

There is a false dichotomy being set forth: scientist vs. theologian. The theologian is just a scientist in drag!

The poet, musician, artist, artisan, and writer all have just as important a contribution to make to this conversation about God, as do the scientist/theologians. The scientists DO need to change, if they deny this.

Scripture is bursting with emotion, on which the scientist/theologian heaps scorn, as if it were a distraction from Logic’s clear voice. Baloney!

Researching Intelligent Design

For Tony, and Tom, and anyone else interested:

The first book that was really convincing to me, and one I would still recommend to you, was Origins and Destiny by Dr. Robert Gange (Word Books, 1986; ISBN 0- 8499-0447-1). Origins and Destiny at Amazon. While at Andrews in 1986-87, I found a tape of a presentation Gange gave, and enjoyed listening to his humble teaching style. Then I went out and bought the book.

The coolest part of that book was Gange’s use of the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics and entropy, and information science (back before the popularity of personal computers, information science had a different connotation). Google the author and title for many references to it on creationist sites.

Irreducible Complexity is a concept taught in the Darwin’s Black Box book referred to above. (Black Box at Amazon). I didn’t read this one, but heard it reviewed and the concept explained by others.

There’s a cool website that is dedicated to discussion of intelligent design purely on its scientific merits. Here is IDEA’s article on Irreducible Complexity.

Love, Peace, Compassion

// October 12th, 2005 // Comments Off // General

Isaiah 54:10, NIV
Though the mountains be shaken
and the hills be removed,
yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken
nor my covenant of peace be removed,”
says the LORD, who has compassion on you.
